Roof Systems

Torch-On Roofing

Torch-applied 2-ply SBS modified bitumen remains one of the toughest, longest-lasting flat roof systems available — particularly for roofs that see foot traffic, harsh sun exposure or aggressive bird and tree litter. Island Roofers carries the certifications, insurance and hot-work protocols required to install torch-on safely.

FAQ

Torch-On Roofing questions, answered.

Is torch-on roofing safe?+

Yes — when installed by certified crews following proper hot-work protocol with a fire watch, torch-applied membrane is a safe and proven system. Our crews carry current Hot Work certifications and we maintain a fire watch on every project per code.

How long does a torch-on roof last?+

A properly installed 2-ply SBS torch-on roof typically lasts 25 – 35 years on Vancouver Island. Lifespan depends heavily on drainage design, sun exposure and annual maintenance.

Torch-on or TPO — which should I choose?+

TPO is lighter, faster to install and an excellent choice for most low-slope residential roofs. Torch-on is tougher underfoot and handles aggressive exposure (heavy tree litter, foot traffic, harsh sun) better. We will recommend the right system for your roof.

Can torch-on be installed on a wood deck?+

Yes, with the proper base sheet and protection — but it requires a certified installer and strict hot-work protocol. We never torch directly onto wood.

How much does torch-on roofing cost?+

On Vancouver Island, a 2-ply SBS torch-on roof typically runs $16 – $24 per square foot installed, depending on insulation, slope, access and flashing complexity.
